St. Mary's College of California

Founded in 1863 by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Francisco Saint
Mary's College of California is one of the oldest colleges in the West. The
College campus originally was located in San Francisco, and operated for several years under Archdiocesan direction.

Archbishop of San Francisco Joseph Alemany who was unhappy with the College's operation under the diocesan clergy, appealed to Pop Pius IX in 1867 for assistance in persuading the Superior General of the Christian Brothers to send Brothers to assume direction of the College. Nine Brothers arrived in San Francisco in 1868. Within two years, the student body increased from 50 to 200. The first Bachelor's degrees were awarded in 1872.

In 1889, the campus was moved to Oakland's Brickpile facility, where the College operated until 1928, when it moved to Moraga. The original Moraga campus was much smaller than the current campus. Eleven of the original buildings, constructed during 1928-1929, are still in use today. They include the Chapel, Dante and Galileo Halls.

Stanford University

The Leland Stanford Junior University, commonly referred to as Stanford University or Stanford, is a private research university on an 8,180-acre (3,310ha) campus located near Palo Alto, California. It is situated in the northwestern Santa Clara Valley on the San Francisco Peninsula, approximately 20 miles northwest of San Jose and 37 miles southeast of San Francisco. Leland Stanford, a California railroad tycoon and politician, founded the university in 1891 in honor of his son, Leland Stanford, Jr. who died of typhoid two months before his 16th birthday. The university was established as a coeducational and nondenominational institution, but struggled financially after the senior Stanford's 1893 death and after much of the campus was damaged by the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. Following World War II, Provost Frederick Terman supported faculty and graduates' entrepreneurialism to build self-sufficient local industry in what would become known as Silicon Valley. By 1970, Stanford was home to a linear accelerator, one of the original four ARPANET nodes, and had transformed itself into a major research university in computer science, mathematics, natural sciences, and social sciences. More than 50 Stanford faculty, staff and alumni have won the Nobel Prize (list of Nobel Laureates by university affiliation). Stanford also boasts the large number of Turing award winners for a single institution.

 California State University Chico Logo

California State University Chico

In 1887 the California Legislature approved the creation of the Northern Branch of the State Normal School for the purpose of training and educating teachers. After much debate over which city would be selected for the new school site, Chico was chosen and construction began on the Chico Normal School, which opened its doors to 90 students in 1889. Throughout the years, the college grew and its name changed to reflect that growth-from Chico Normal School to Chico State Teachers College to Chico State College. In 1972, we became known as California State University, Chico.  The University, commonly called "Chico State", now offers more than 100 undergraduate majors and options.

The main campus is situated on 119 acres in downtown Chico, but Chico State also owns a 1,500-acre farm and five acres of off-campus dorms about one mile from the main campus. The University also manages 3,950-acre Butte Creek Ecological Reserve.
